November 20, 2009 - Haiku

Twitter entry … I’m lighting a candle right now. Joke: What happens when a Psychiatrist introduces an ancient Japanese poetrywritten in a 5/7/5 format to an obsessive compulsive writer, addicted to ink? She obsessively bashes out poetry on an antique bloody typewriter! But I thank you Graham.

This Haiku came to me …. you guessed it …. in the shower! I haven’t got into twittering myself but from what I understand it’s a response to the question “what are you doing right now?” Would be really interesting if people used Haiku to describe that moment. Just imagine … twitters full of sensuous Haiku! Instead of saying: “I’m taking a shower right now.” You’d say “shampoo bubbles skid blah, blah”. If you’re a twitter – give it ago. It could be the start of something new …pass it on …

How sensuous can you get in 17 syllables? During my recent trip up North I met a very interesting man, Graham Martin who introduced me to a Japanese form of poetry called Haiku - and a place to share it – Sensual Haiku. It’s one verse of 17 syllables, 3 lines. eg. ants/of/pain/ted/stick (5) – ho/ney/bo/ttoms/sweet/to/taste (7). dots/from/sti/cky/feet (5). You’ll find yourself counting on fingers! It’s not supposed to rhyme - just provoke our senses. I wrote this one about an Aboriginal painting. Give it a go – it’s fun and the writing process is a nice distraction from whatever else is going on in your head – or day. Graham works in the area of suicide prevention (great resource website). Stay tuned for more Haiku …
